On September 24, 2021, the BFAR Mindoro Shrimp Hatchery was inaugurated at Brgy. Labasan, Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro. The establishment of the hatchery was built through the project alignment component of the National Shrimp Production Program (NSPP), otherwise known as Hipon Iangat ang ProduksyON, and under the “Bayanihan to Recover as One” Act (Bayanihan II) which is in support of Masaganang Ani at Mataas na Kita Advocacy Program of the previous government administration.

The Mindoro Shrimp Hatchery aims to produce high-quality shrimp fry to maintain and develop high-quality broodstocks. When fully operated, the hatchery will serve as a facility for production, training, educational, and research purposes. Furthermore, it is expected to benefit at least 300 growers and 197 BFAR-registered shrimp farms producing 50 million-100 million pieces of post-larvae (PLs) annually.

This project is already considered an achievement as it is the first constructed hatchery under the supervision of BFAR. Moreover, it wouldn’t only support Mindoro Island but also the neighboring regions of the country.
